YOU NEED TO LEARN FOR AT LEAST 12 MONTHS ON YOUR Ls | Print |

Experienced drivers are safer drivers – so Victoria’s new Graduated Licensing System requires that if you are under 21 years you must drive on your Ls for a minimum of 12 months before you take the test for your probationary licence.

Drive it, book it!

During the 12 months you'll be required to log at least 120 hours of supervised driving. It’s sensible to keep logging hours after that too. You'll receive an official VicRoads Learner Log Book when you are issued with your learner permit. Every driving session must be entered in the logbook correctly. Each entry is signed by the supervising driver, and the learner and the supervising driver both must sign the 'Declaration of Completion'. Click here for the first several pages of the logbook which show how to complete it correctly.

Why 12 months?

More young people die from road crashes than anything else. Each year in Victoria crashes involving 18 to 25 year olds kill approximately 120 people and seriously injure 2,300. This is about one third of the Victorian road toll.

Young drivers have a higher risk of crashing because they don’t have enough driving experience. Twelve months provides greater opportunity to ensure that a learner gains enough driving experience to be a safer driver.

If you are 21 and over, or under 25, you stay on your L plates for at least six months; and if you are 25 or older, it is three months.
