If you’re a P plater or a driver under 26 and you have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .07 or more when tested, you could find yourself blowing into an alcohol interlock when you return to driving – on top of the usual heavy fines and licence suspension.

What’s an alcohol interlock?

Apart from being embarrassing to explain to your mates, an alcohol interlock is fitted to your car – like the one shown in the picture below – that you have to blow into before you start the car. What’s the story?

If you’re a P plater or a driver under 26 and you have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .07 or more you’ll:

• Face fines of up to $1,289
• Lose your licence for up to 48 months
• Have to use an alcohol interlock for at least six months – after you’ve got your licence back.

Why has this been introduced?

Alcohol is involved in 50 per cent of deaths for 21 - 25 year old drivers and that makes this a vital part of Victoria’s new Graduated Licensing System designed to make younger drivers, be safer and better drivers.
